Portable COM Port remoting tool:
Nothing more than what you need!
Why this tool?
During the development of my electronic boards I had the need for a tool like this in two situations:
1) Debugging an hardware board communicating with a software application developed by someone else living far from me;
2) Connecting to a remote device for service or maintenance.
For this reason I decided to search for such a tool, but I was only able to find really expensive softwares performing a lot of tasks. The fact is that I had no need for all that features, I only need a simple tool allowing me to connect to a local COM port and redirecting all the traffic coming from and to my application to a COM port of another computer on the Internet.
That's the reason why I decided to write my own application acting as a bridge for the TX and RX lines of the COM port. This tool has been used by me and a few friends of mine for some months, and after some improovements it is now affordable and optimized to minimize latency given by the TCP/IP transport.
The PortRedirector toolset is composed by two application: Com2Net and Net2Com. Net2Com opens a connection with a local COM port and starts listening on a TCP port. Com2Net opens a connection with a local COM port and then connects to the remote instance of Net2Com. That's all you need to bridge a physical local COM port and a remote COM port. So if you have an Hardware device used for service or maintenance of a remote device yust connect it to your PC's COM port and then start using PortRedirector.
If you need to connect a local application to the remote COM port you need something more: a virtual null modem link. The most reliable and cost free way of doing that is to download the well proven and reliable com0com. Please read com0com help files to configure it to be used with PortRedirector or contact me at the support email. If you prefer you can also buy a virtual com port driver.
Here you can see Com2Net's and Net2Com's simple and intuitive user interfaces.
Please note that those application are portable, so you don't need to install them into a PC. Simply extract the content of the zip file in a USB key and start using PortRedirector toolsuite. PortRedirector has been testd on Windows XP and Windows Vista and requires the .NET Framework 2.0.
License
The DEMO version of this toolsuite is full functional, but it works for two minutes and then it automatically disconnects. Ounce registered the Toolsuite can be used by a single user on as many PC as needed since it is not locked on the PC hardware. The license cost for the full toolsuite (Com2Net plus Net2Com) is ONLY 35€!!!
